Room size is a guide, not a rule. A small ensuite can still have luxury finishes, and a large bathroom can be done on a budget. Your final price depends on both the size of the room and the finishes you choose.
Part 1
Your existing bathroom
Before we design anything, we look at what's already there. These factors set the starting cost.
| Factor | Budget Friendly | Mid Range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room sizeMore space means more tiles, more waterproofing and more labour. | Usually under 3m² | Usually 3m² – 6m² | Usually over 6m² |
| Room shapeSquare rooms are faster to tile. Angles, nooks and sloped ceilings need extra cutting. | Standard rectangle (e.g. 1.8 x 1m, 2 x 1m, 2.5 x 1.2m) | Standard or slightly irregular | Any shape |
| Fixtures being removedEach item removed takes time to disconnect and dispose of. | Shower and small basin only | Shower, basin, toilet, possibly a bath | Multiple fixtures, bath, double vanity |
| How much is currently tiledRemoving old tiles is slow, heavy work, and more tiles means more rubbish removal. | Partly tiled walls | Partly or fully tiled | Fully tiled, floor to ceiling |
| Wall typePlasterboard is quicker to work with. Solid brick takes longer to cut into for new pipes. | Usually plasterboard | Plasterboard or brick | Plasterboard or brick |
| Type of homeApartments add strata rules, lift bookings and limited work hours. Upstairs bathrooms mean carrying everything up and down. | Single-storey house | House, unit or apartment | House, apartment or double-storey townhouse |

What you choose
These are the decisions that make the biggest difference between packages.

|---|---|---|---|
| Amount of new tilingMore tiled area means more materials and labour. | Minimal: floor and wet areas only | Larger areas or a feature wall | Floor to ceiling throughout |
| Tile size and typeSmall mosaics and large heavy tiles take longer to lay than standard sizes. | Standard 300x600mm or 600x600mm | Wider range, including mosaics and feature tiles | Large-format, natural stone-look or designer tiles |
| Tile patternPatterns need more cuts and careful setting out. | Simple straight lay | Brick, stacked or diamond pattern | Herringbone and other detailed patterns |
| Tile edgesMitred edges (corners cut at 45° for a seamless finish) take far longer than fitting a trim. | Standard trims, no mitre cuts | Some mitred corners | Mitred edges throughout |
| LayoutMoving the toilet, shower or basin means moving pipes and drains. | No change | Some changes (e.g. bath replaced with a larger shower) | Full redesign around how you live |
| Shower baseA level, step-free shower needs the floor lowered and extra waterproofing. | Step-up shower base | Step-up base (level entry optional) | Level, step-free entry |
| Shower screenFrameless glass is thicker and custom-measured. | Fully framed screen | Semi-frameless screen | Frameless panels, walk-in shower, custom glass |
| Shower setupExtra shower heads need more plumbing inside the wall. | Standard shower head | Shower and rail combo | Rain shower, dual shower heads |
| Shower niche (built-in shelf)It has to be framed, waterproofed and tiled. | None | One niche | Custom niches |
| Vanity and storageWall-hung and custom units need wall reinforcement and more fitting time. | Floor-standing vanity | Wall-hung vanity with stone-look top | Custom cabinetry with stone benchtop, recessed shaving cabinet |
| ToiletWall-hung toilets need a hidden cistern built into the wall. | Existing or standard toilet | New toilet suite | Wall-hung toilet with in-wall cistern |
| Tapware and fittingsPremium brands and special finishes cost more to buy. | Standard taps, towel rail and fittings | Better-quality ranges | Premium brands in brushed brass, gunmetal and similar finishes |
| ElectricalNew wiring needs a licensed electrician. | None | New exhaust fan and ceiling light | Heated towel rail, underfloor heating, LED mirror, feature lighting |
| DrainageHidden drains need tile cut precisely into the grate. | Standard floor waste | Standard or strip drain | Hidden tile-insert drains |
| Painting | None | Ceiling | Full room |
